The Story of Scottsdale

An ancient civilization farmed on the land that is known today as Scottsdale; subsequently Native American Indians settled the area with their own traditional villages. The first small modern settlement in Scottsdale began in 1868, but real growth in population did not occur until the late 1880s. The town was named in 1894 and by 1912, the first inn was built, an inn which today is a modern resort. In 1937 Frank Lloyd Wright came to the area, and his influence is seen in much of the architecture throughout the area today.

The city was incorporated in 1951 and in the 1960’s a system of parks and golf courses were put in as a sort of flood control channel that is known as the Scottsdale Greenbelt. Through the years Scottsdale has grown to become Arizona’s sixth largest city. It is also known as a premier golf and resort community and with tourism being the largest part of its commerce, it boasts over 70 hotels and resorts.
